Keep Momming

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 6:57 AM
Disclosure: “I participated in a campaign on behalf of  Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Shire. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”

Raising a child at any age is challenging, and when it comes to mothers and daughters, the dynamic can be even more complex. What some may dismiss as “typical tween girl behavior” can sometimes be symptoms of something more serious. Research suggests that girls are more likely than boys to report having mostly inattentive Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Since inattentive symptoms can be less noticeable than hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, it is important that moms know what to look for.

That’s why I’m pleased to be joining Shire, CHADD and Holly Robinson Peete to announce the launch of keep momming, a new public service initiative geared towards the moms of tween girls to raise awareness of ADHD.

The campaign is anchored within a new digital hub, KeepMomming.com, where you’ll find tips, tools and other go-to resources for moms, including a checklist to help recognize the symptoms of ADHD – inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity – and then encourages moms to talk to their daughter’s doctor. The keep momming initiative can help moms learn about ADHD and provide ideas on how to spark a conversation and stay connected with their tween.

FutureFood 2050- #sponsored #futurefood2050

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post and contains hyperlinks. However, all opinions are my own.

As a parent, I'm concerned about what my family eats. With so many different food products available on the market, sometimes mom's are clueless when it comes to what in the heck are our families really eating!

The folks at the  Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) have been dedicated to advancing the science of food since 1939. Their non-profit scientific society—with more than 18,000 members from more than 100 countries—brings together food scientists, technologists and related professionals from academia, government and industry.

Last Spring IFT launched FutureFood 2050 —a multi-year program highlighting the people and stories leading the efforts for a healthier, safer and better nourished planet that’s needed to feed 9 billion+ people by 2050.  IFT continues to roll out interviews with the world’s most impactful leaders in food and science, and next year watch for FutureFood 2050, the documentary film.

I had a chance to stop by the new website and check out some very interesting articles. As a concerned parent, I want to know what my family is eating and what changes are being made to ensure my family's safety.

One of my biggest concerns is food safety. With so many different food-borne illnesses, it's scary to think my family could get sick from eating a hamburger or a piece of fried chicken. Consumer activist Caroline Smith DeWaal has devoted her life for nearly twenty years to insure the safety of consumers. She has dedicated her career to fighting food-borne illnesses by documenting them and advocating for faster and stricter reporting standards.  DeWaal is changing the horizon regarding how food is processed. Although, it is an ongoing process and much work needs to be done before no food-borne illnesses exist, DeWall is making a difference one small step at a time. To read her story click here.

Be sure to check FutureFood2050 out and sign up at www.futurefood2050.com to follow the stories and connect science to the conversation on how to feed the planet. As a parent, it's one of the best decisions you can make for your family.

Keep the Kids Safe and Sound During the Summer

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 6:57 AM 0 comments
The opinions in this article are my own. I do not work for, or with, any brand mentioned in this article, nor do I have any official relationship with them.  I have a relationship with GigaSavvy, for whom I create original editorial content.

Summer is right around the corner. Kids are filled with anticipation and parents are filled with dread. How do you keep your child healthy during the summer? Keeping your child well during hot summer months can be daunting, but if you follow these tips, you and your child will have a stress-free, fun-filled summer. You can relax and your kid can be a kid.

The hot summer can bring on a lot of health issues for your child, but the best way to keep them safe and sound is to follow the RULES

  • Remind your kids of summer hazards. The hot summer brings out snakes and a variety of insects. These creatures like to hide in dark places. Kids like to explore where they shouldn't. It's your job as a parent to be on guard. The best way to keep them safe from harm is to remind your child to stop, look, and listen.  Practice these safety habits with your child. Have them stop before they go wandering off into the unknown. Make them look before they leap. Lastly, make your child listen. If he or she is aware of their surroundings, they are less likely to get bitten or stung.

  • Use common sense. Kids are natural born curiosity machines, especially in the summer when they are bored. They want to explore and get into trouble. Keeping your child out of harm's way is a task. You have to teach him or her to use their common sense. Remember, if something doesn't look right, then it will hurt your child.  The best way to protect them from harm is to repeat the warning signs, remind them of danger, and require frequent check-ins.

  • Listen to your child. The best way to keep your child safe and sound during the summer is to listen. Kids will let you know when something isn't right. Their tone changes when they're in danger. Keep your ears open and your child safe.

  • Employ other parents and kids. Form a summer neighborhood watch. More sets of eyes are better than one. If your child is being watched constantly, the less likely he or she will get hurt.

  • Stabilize your child's surroundings. If your child's environment is free from debris, danger, and disregard, he or she can enjoy their summer without worry. You can breath a sigh of relief. Your main job during the summer is to keep your child safe and sound.
If you are your child follow the RULES, you both will have a stress-free and fun-filled summer. For more information about staying healthy check out Molina Heathcare for great tips and advice.
